Yesterday I reread Arnold Bennett’s “How to Live on 24 Hours a Day“. You can read it in 30 to 45 minutes. Although it was written in 1910 it is relevant today if one changes certain circumstances of the times. It is in today’s terms a self-help book. Here’s what I learned and may put into effect.
- Bennett recommends that one one spend at least three sessions of one hour and a half each per week reading non-fiction. Poetry is okay but not novels. He asserts that if you do this for a year in one area you’ll become somewhat of an expert in this field. He is flexible. It can be books on car repair. Of course, you do not have to stick to the same topic at all times. I can do this, I probably do it anyway. If I cut out the time I spend reading Flipboard on my phone, it will help.
- Bennett was writing mainly for Londoners, many of whom spent a half hour twice a day on public transport, going back and forth to work. He recommended spending the half hour in the morning reflecting, probably reflecting on what one had written the night before. This is not as easy nowadays. You can still do it if you use public transport but many of us drive or are carpooling. It would be dangerous if driving, perhaps, and rude if carpooling, Maybe you can reflect aloud with your fellow passengers. Or use the half hour to write your reflections in your journal later on in the day. For me, I can just reflect on my blog.
- Another recommendation is that one get up by 6:00 in the morning and go to bed at 10:00. My brother does this and he has written five books as a result. I would love to do this and am aiming towards it. I got up at 9:00 today and many that know me know that is good.
- He also recommends that we spend the half hour on the way home reasoning. I’m kind of fuzzy on this one so will leave it.
