Last week I began thinking about and exploring the concept of joy. I mean to give my take on it, but first a distinction has to be made between happiness and joy. Here are a few quotes I discovered as I was reading.

The fact is always obvious much too late but the most singular difference between happiness and joy is that happiness is a solid and joy a liquid.

J. D. Salinger, author of catcher in the Rye.

But then joy is never in our power and pleasure often is.

-C. S. Lewis, Surprised by Joy

Joy exists even in the face of adversity, in spite of the things that might make us unhappy.

Karen Kinley, The Happy Writer

Happiness is an inch deep and a mile wide. Joy is a mile deep and an inch wide.

-Yale Center for Faith and Culture, Youtube

  1. That’s the way I look at it. Joy may not last long but it is more intense and meaningful. I don’t think you can search for joy but under the right circumstances it jumps out at you. 1 minute of joy is worth a day or more of happiness. Unlike a lot of people, I don’t think God is necessary to feel joy. Instead you just need to have to have a faith and awe of the universe and life..
